Benin-Abraka Road: Why Obaseki Can't Be Trusted

'opinion' Liberty 'Ruyi

Prostitution is believed to be the oldest profession with semblance to politics which is almost as old. The characteristics shamelessness, hypocrisy and subversion associated with both professions makes so many decent people perceive it as a dirty game, and even a few supposed exception like Godwin Obaseki painted himself, have become worse than the traditional players.

Achieving good roads in Orhionmwon have been identified over the years like in many other places as a stepping stone to development, and along that line Oshiomhole was persuaded into tarring the Evbuobanosa-Oza-Igbanke road, Ogan-Evboeghae-Ugo road, Ugo-Uronigbe road including Abudu township roads, Igbanke township roads, Urhonigbe township roads, Ugo township roads amongst others.

It was on the basis of continuity that Orhionmwon in 2016 voted APC into Osadebe House with one of the most promising road (Benin-Abraka road) left to be done. The optimism that the Benin-Abraka road will be fixed particularly when the new governor proclaimed love for Orhionmwon made elections difficult for Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu in the domain; it was only a celebration of what could be recorded in history as grand deception.

On the 23rd of September 2017, Governor Godwin Obaseki while receiving PDP defectors led by Hon. Tony Osazuwa and Pastor Joseph Osagiede into the APC at Abudu, sensing the tension in the rally arising from the poor state of the Benin-Abraka road, declared, and I quote, "I am from Orhionmwon. Let me assure you today that I will dualize the Benin-Abraka road within the next 24 months. We are in partnership with the NDDC to fix it on a 50/50 percent basis, and even though NDDC fail on their part, we will take up the task in full. If I don't do it, know I am not from Orhionmwon."

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, sensing that campaigns will be difficult in Iyekorhionmwon where the road transverse, Governor Godwin Obaseki mobilized contractors to site, and with so much paparazi and the taunted flag off by the Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, one was expectant that the gently nursed she-goat was about giving birth. It was only two weeks after the elections that all caterpillars and other heavy equipments vanished from site till date.

On the 10th of January this year, after traveling through the Benin-Abraka road, raged with anger even while the governor was still in APC, I made a short post on social media that we cannot campaign for Obaseki in Orhionmwon. I concluded that we cannot mount any podium with our conscience intact and say Obaseki has done us well. Thank goodness APC didn't provide its platform for such conscience-killing task.

I heard in the news few days ago that Obaseki is mobilizing caterpillars to the Benin-Abraka road once more for the 2020 Edo gubernatorial elections like he did in 2019. One would have expected this technocrat governor to be above board. One would have expected him to consult his conscience and seek political understanding of Orhionmwon people, or at least have the common knowledge that you can't deceive a prostitute to your bed twice. We will meet at the village-to-village campaign, and election result from Orhionmwon will actually prove how smart Obaseki was.
